One day, one of the servants of the emperor came to that shop. He asked for half kg limestone. Birbal asked him why he needed that. The servant told him that this was for the emperor. Birbal then questioned the servant about his work at the palace. The servant told him that he had been commissioned to make Pan for the Emperor. To that, Birbal responded by asking if the emperor was happy while ordering him to make Pan.

After pondering for a while the servant told him that the emperor was perhaps in a bad mood. Birbal suggested that the servant should take yogurt instead of limestone because of the emperor’s mood. That made the servant perplexed at the relationship between yogurt and bad mood. Nevertheless, the servant got half kg yogurt instead of limestone upon Birbal’s insisting. As the servant reached the court, the emperor asked him if he had brought limestone. The servant replied that he had. The emperor roared in anger and ordered the servant to eat the limestone. The servant was shocked at this order but he was secretly glad that he had listened to Birbal.

So he followed the emperor’s order and ate the limestone which was in fact yogurt. The next day, the emperor asked about the servant’s condition, only to find out that he was perfectly alright and doing his duties. That surprised the emperor as how could one survive having eaten half a kg of limestone. He ordered the servant to explain what had happened. The servant told the emperor the whole story. Akbar was rather amazed at finding this out and he asked the servant to bring that man in the court.

Upon getting this order, the servant hurried to the Pan shop. Birbal knew at once when he saw the servant that the emperor has asked for him. The servant nodded in reply. Birbal told him that he was no ordinary man and he was not gonna go to court with a servant. ‘Go and tell the emperor,’ he said. The servant returned to the court and told the emperor that Birbal had refused to come. The emperor then sent one of his officers and a guard to bring Birbal. But Birbal refused to go with them as well. The emperor understood that Birbal was a crook. And he sent a royal car to bring Birbal and this time he filled.

When he came to the court, the emperor asked him why he didn’t let the servant follow the emperor’s orders. “When I asked for limestone, why did you send me yogurt?” asked the emperor. ‘I didn’t want an innocent’s blood on the emperor’s hands’, replied Birbal. Akbar was really amazed to hear that reply and he asked, ‘How did you figure out that I wanted to take the servant’s life?’ ‘My Lord, when I saw that man asking for half a kg of limestone, I asked him about his job’, replied Birbal. ‘And he told me that he prepares Pan for the emperor’.

‘I, then, realized that he must have made some mistake in making Pan and that must have hurt the emperor’s tongue’. ‘So I figured out that Your Highness must have wanted to punish the servant with limestone.’ ‘And that’s why I suggested him to take yogurt instead of limestone’. He hesitated at first but then listened to my advice. ‘And so, I saved Your Highness from a certain murder’. The emperor was really amused with his reply and kept him in the court as one of his men. Once, the emperor promised to grant Birbal some land because he was too glad with him. But despite waiting patiently, Birbal didn’t get the land. One day, Birbal found a suitable chance and reminded the emperor about the land. But Akbar did not listen to him and ignored him. Not too long after that, Akbar and Birbal embarked on a journey. On their way, they saw a camel. Upon seeing the camel, the emperor asked Birbal, ‘Why is the neck of camel crooked?’ Birbal still couldn’t get over the unfulfilled promise of land. So he took this opportunity and said, ‘My Lord, the camel must have promised someone some land, as well’.

The emperor not only understood Birbal’s sarcasm but decided not to be angry. Soon after that, he in fact gave Birbal some land. The Three Questions of the Eunuch of Birbal Some of Akbar’s courtiers envied Birbal. They always tried to embarrass Birbal in front of the emperor but never succeeded.

One day, a young man who was looking for such an opportunity, said to the emperor, ‘Birbal always acts so smart. Kindly ask him if he can answer 3 of my questions’. The emperor allowed the eunuch to ask Birbal the questions he wanted to ask. 1. Where’s the center of the world? Eunuch’s first question from Birbal was: ‘Where is the center of this world?’ Birbal was very clever. He fixed a piece of wood in the floor, right where he was standing and said, ‘That’s exactly where the center of this world is. Go ahead and measure it for yourself if you doubt. ‘ Eunuch was clueless at Birbal’s reply.

If he refused to accept Birbal’s reply, then he would have to prove that by taking the measurements himself. So he took a deep breath and asked the next question. How many stars are there in the sky? The next question he asked Birbal was how many stars were there in the sky. The eunuch seemed quite satisfied by this question, thinking that now he had got Birbal. But Birbal was too good for him. He even had an answer for that. He asked for a sheep and said that the number of stars in the sky were as many as there were hair on that sheep.

He, then, asked the eunuch to count the sheep hair if he wanted to check. The eunuch had to accept this answer as well as he was almost at his wits’ end. How can a woman avoid getting divorced? The eunuch then asked his final question which he thought would really challenge Birbal. The question was: ‘A man’s wife was climbing up a wooden ladder standing by a wall’. She was half way through when her husband got mad at her and said … ‘If you go further up, I’ll divorce you’. ‘If you try to come down, I’ll divorce you’.

‘And so will be the case if you try to jump down the ladder’. ‘Now tell me, how can that woman avoid this situation’. Birbal responded by saying that she doesn’t deserve to live with a stupid man like that. ‘But if you want to save her marriage at any cost, then here’s my reply’. ‘Call some relative of that woman and ask him to carefully place the ladder on the floor’. ‘And then ask him to help the lady get off the ladder. That’s how she can avoid getting divorced ‘. Once again, Birbal gave a fitting reply. The one who wanted to see Birbal embarrassed was not feeling embarrassed himself. Who is more ominous?

Once, Emperor Akbar asked Birbal who could be the most threatening person in his empire. Birbal said that he had heard of a person so ominous that if someone sees his face in the morning, he can’t get food the whole day. That surprised the emperor and he ordered to bring that person to his court. The next day Birbal somehow managed to make sure that the first person the emperor sees after waking up is that ominous person. And it turned out that the emperor got so busy with his daily tasks that he forgot to have a meal.

In the evening, when he finally realized that he is hungry, it reminded him of what Birbal had said. And he thought that the said person was in fact ominous. The emperor told Birbal that he thought he was right. Such a person does not deserve to live. Birbal, who thought it to be funny situation, now got worried for the life of that man. He thought for a while and then said … ‘My Lord, this is correct that you couldn’t get any meal after watching that man’s face.

But do consider this for a moment that the said person also saw your face in the morning and now he is about to get hanged. ‘ ‘Now tell us who do you think is more ominous?’ This reply really amused the emperor and instead of punishing him, he gave that man some riches and let him go.
