did you know that democracy was invented at the beginning of the 5th century BC. almost simultaneously in Athensand rome without one copying the other Today all about democracy in honor of world democracy day on september 15th let’s start off with explaining what democracy is in a nutshell before diving into its greek and roman origins the the word democracy comes from the Greek democratia with deimos meaning the people and kratos mean power or government so put it together and you basically get the rule of the people

today’s idea of democracy is a representative democracy, which means that the people have the power to choose your representative while the democracy of Athens was adirect democracy which we will get to very soon keep in mind throughout this discussion of democracy and the citizens of athens and rome this only refers to the adult male citizens therefore not female slaves either foreigners that lived in the region ancient Greece was never politically unified as a country but was made up of city-states since

we have far more information on the history of athens than any other city-state in greece that’s the one we’ll be focusing on so let’s get some context before we jump into the many layers of athenian democracy we’re looking at the 5th century bce which is known as both the classical period and the golden age of athens it is this period between around 490 and 404 bce that athens produced its famous art architecture ceramic theater the political institutions that’s right democracy

so in 507 bce kleisthenids was elected as arkhan a high position of public office and he started introducing some reforms to the earlier laws of the statesman alone with his government and the law the reforms saw the beginning of democracy in athens and gave kleisthenis the title of the father of Athenian democracy at this point the Athenians thought so they had the best form of government and they should get it set up elsewhere they encouraged the greek colonies of asia minor to revolt against the persians

who were controlling them at that time which sparked the beginning of the persian wars which lasted between 492 and 449 bce if you want to learn all about the battles between the Greek cities and the acamented persian empire you can head to our video all about the persian wars right here after the greek city-states were victorious the general and statesman pericles formed the delian league which was an alliance of city-states that would defend greece against any other persian aggression

the treasury for the league was held in athens and pericles used the money to make his city beautiful with funds going to the arts and architecture pericles was the man who advocated for what is known as radical democracy and he developed the Athenian democracy to his own mort de la peste en 429 av. so what did democracy in athens look like well classini’s made some radical changes to the athenian landscape by changing the four tribes of attica into ten he changed the traditional king group classification to a new one

where each member of the deimos or citizen body would belong to one of the 113 local units or dems each team would belong to one of the 30 tritiers and each tritus would belong to one of 10 philae membership to be redeemed was hereditary and each team had its own political structure the sign chosen each year by people to guide them in athens any male citizen could participate in the assembly of ecclesia which would meet at least once a month on the penins hill that had a dedicated space for 6000 citizens to participate

specific issues discussed in the assembly included deciding on military and financial issues organizing and beginning of food maintenance legislation and political processesdecide to send sent decide whether whether or not to sign treaties by voting to lift o spend funds and discuss military matters at these assemblies you could also participate in the ostracism of a citizen which took place once a year everyone would write a name on an ostrocon or ceramic shirt and vote one person into exile for 10 years

this person could come back as a citizen and they didn’t lose their property during their 10 years away aristotle claims that the actual institution of the process was made in around 508 bce under class thinnes in in order to prevent the tyranny of a single why else would you want to vote someone out of athens for 10 years well perhaps someone was suggesting policies that you didn’t like or perhaps they were unliked as a person as claimed by plutarch in his aristides who says that a fellow member of the assembly wanted to vote out aristides

because he was sick of hearing the politician constantly referred to as the just ostracism was also used to exile for mysticales who was accused of bribery kimon was ostracized because he was suspected of being a bit too friendly with sparta and thucydides not the historian was a victim of pericles who used ostracism as a way to remove his political rival from the arena rather than being identified by your father you’re identified by your deem

so for example pericles son of xanthippus would be identified instead as pericles of the deemed collagos any male in edem automatically became a citizen and they could participate in the boule which was a council of 500 men 50 from each tribe chosen by lot from the boule 50 brittanas were elected on a rotation basis for a one month service in the brittany where they would oversee day-to-day operations and were like an executive committee of the boulet how were they chosen by lot well there was a specially designed machine known as a claritaria
