Barbaros Hayreddin Episode 10 Summary

So I meant to say company, not corporation. On 1 January 1974, both the PSC and NSC went through a merger, creating the the Pakistan National Shipping Company (PNSC). Private companies were done away with and there were 51 vessels in PNSC’s fleet. 26 ships out of these were procured from private companies.

The rest were scrapped. In 1977, a new agreement led to the addition of 14 new vessels for PNSC. I’ve mentioned one of these in my previous video, the MV Murree, which sank during its first few years of service. Another vessel called NAWABSHAH also sank 4-5 years later. I’ll cover its story in detail soon. The agreement in 1997 should’ve led to an increase in the number of vessels in PNSC’s fleet. Sadly, this didn’t happen.

The PNSC didn’t have oil tankers at first. While PNSC was fulfilling the demand for trade in Pakistan, but not a lot of private investors were interested. While some did approach PNSC for partnerships the bottom line is, Pakistan’s shipping industry didn’t flourish due to nationalisation. The number of vessels also gradually decreased over time. The number of shore employees remained the same, but there weren’t enough vessels to tend to.

While PNSC got by, it didn’t yield enough profits. It was 1989 by the time this issue was acknowledged by the government, when Nawaz Shareef’s government deregulated shipping. This meant private owners could form and run shipping companies again, but nothing of the sort happened. While a couple of companies did get registered in Pakistan and invested in vessels and ran shipping operations,

there was still no sign of the expected “boom” in the industry. Because of such issues, there is distrust in the political government. Political instability, financial instability, and corruption deter prospective investors from investing within a country. After the deregulation of Pakistan’s shipping industry, PNSC was listed on Pakistan’s stock exchange investors were encouraged to invest in the corporation to help it thrive. However, that just didn’t seem possible. Now, onto a different sub-topic.

This was a time when the oil (petroleum) industry was flourishing. The world knew the value of oil tankers. We didn’t initially need oil tankers because we had no oil. Our natural oil reserves were more than enough for us. That said, when the need for oil grew, a new company was formed called NTC, or the National Tanker Company with only one tanker called the MT Johar. I wasn’t sure why, but anyway… It kept on running for some time. Around 2000-2001, during Chairman Naqvi’s authority, NTC was merged with PNSC, and 2-3 more tankers were brought in. PNSC trades better now,

since it knows the value of oil and bulk. No other cargo is as lucrative. While they do hire vessels for other cargo, oil and bulk carriers are more prevalent. But still, I don’t think they’re doing enough. But I do think this company is among Pakistan’s most lucrative entities. Now, moving on to its decline. First of all, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s decision to nationalise all companies meant all private industries were forced to be nationalised. The deterred private investors at the time left and never returned, and that was the final nail in the coffin. Moreover, airlines are another example. They are easy to set up and don’t require as much capital.
